What it is
A taluk sits between the district and the revenue village in Tamil Nadu's administrative structure, grouping a number of revenue villages under one office headed by a Tahsildar. Its name appears on every patta, chitta and FMB sketch alongside the district and village, but it is an administrative and revenue unit rather than a survey one: a single taluk can span many survey numbers across its villages. It is also the level at which the state organises day-to-day land administration, from patta transfers to certificate issuance, below the district.
Why it matters when you buy
Many of the offline steps in a land purchase, such as applying for a patta transfer or a legal heir certificate, are handled at the taluk office covering the property's revenue village, so knowing the right taluk saves a wasted trip. Online, both eservices.tn.gov.in and tnreginet.gov.in ask you to select district and taluk before drilling down to the village and survey number, so getting this right early makes every subsequent search faster and less error-prone.
